A Complete Step by Step Guide to Install a WordPress Plugin

WordPress comes along with the limited features. It’s considered as one of the powerful CMS that can be used for creating individual or company online presence on Internet via blog, article directly, business Web site, forums and etc. You must be wondering how it would be possible to use the standard CMS for creating various type of blogs, forums & Web sites. The answer is huge number of plugins that are available on WordPress plugin directory. There are also paid plugins which might not be available on WP directory, however it could be downloaded from plugin owner Web site against the online payment.

The plugin is a piece of code which becomes the part of your WordPress CMS once you install and activate it using the different ways which will be explained in detail in this tutorial. Since, you are now fully aware the importance of plugin, so lets move ahead with the installation part.

There are four different ways of installing plugin :

1. Installing a Plugin through WordPress Admin Search

2. Installing a Plugin using Upload Method of WordPress Admin Area

3. Installing a Plugin via cPanel File Manager

4. Installing a Plugin via FTP

Option 1: Install a Plugin through WordPress Admin Search

This is considered as the most simple way of installing plugin. The only drawback of using this option is that you can only install the plugins which are available on WordPress directory.

Following are the steps that needs to be followed to install the plugin using this option.

Step 1

Open WP admin area by typing your blog url in the browser address bar

Enter your admin Username & Password in the relevant text boxes

The WordPress admin dashboard appears on successful login and you would be able to use the available options, but make sure you have administrative rights else you won’t be allowed to installed the plugin

Go to Admin panel on left side and click on Plugin >> Add New to open the Install Plugin Web page

Type Plugin name or functionality in the search box and hit enter. The search results will display single or multiple plugins as shown in the below snapshot. In our case, we are installing SEO plugin

Review the plugin list and install the plugin according to your requirements. If you are confused among the provided choices, then it is suggested to install the plugin based on rating and number of installations. In our case, we are going with Yoast SEO which is the best SEO plugin these days. Click on Install now to start the installation

Once installed, click on Activate Plugin

Option 2: Installing a Plugin using Upload Method of WordPress Admin Area

If you want to install the plugin that you have downloaded in your storage device, then this method fulfills your need by allowing you to upload the plugin. Sometimes, you might opt for this method when the plugin you want to install is not available in WordPress Plugin directory due to any reason, say it’s paid plugin and only can be download from specific Web site.

Following are the steps It’s time to begin to see the steps to install a plugin using this method:

Step 1

We are assuming that you are logged as an administrator.

Click on Plugin>> Add new from admin panel

Click on Upload Plugin on top of page and adjacent to Add Plugins caption

Click on Choose File and then select downloaded plugin from your hard disk drive location from

Click Open

Click on Install Now to begin the installation process

Click Activate once the plugin installation is completed

You are done, now you can configure the plugin as per your requirements

Option 3: Installing Plugin via cPanel File Manager

This method is comparatively complex and time taking therefore, it’s not being utilized to great extent by WordPress users. Nevertheless, if your blog is self hosted and you are facing some issues in installing plugin using WP admin then you can go with this option.

Step 1

Open Web hosting cPanel by typing (www.yourblog.com/cpanel) in browser address bar and hit Enter to download the login page

Step 2

Provide  your Username and Password in the respective text boxes in order to get access to Web hosting cPanel.

Step 3

On successful login , you can see the cPanel of your Web hosting with various sections and icons.

Click for File Manager under Filess of cPanel to browse your blog(s) directories

Dialog box will appear asking for selection of directory. Select Web Root directory and then click OK to view the directory structure of your Web hosting account

Step 6

Click your blog directory under public_html to view all the files and folders

Step 7

Explore the blog directory, in our case bizmissionvision.com is the blog directory which contains WordPress files and folder. Since, we are looking for plugin directory which can be found under wp-content as shown in the below snapshot

Click on Upload from File Manager toolbar

The Upload Files screen will be loaded displaying the file uploading and permission sections

Click on Choose File and select the plugin zip file that you have already download. In our case, we are installing wptouch plugin which is already placed in the system

The progress bar on the bottom left of screen will be showing the current status of installation

On successful installation, close the upload page and maximize File Manager Web page. Select the recently installed plugin and click on Extract icon from the File Manager toolbar

Step 14

Go to Admin panel >> Plugins >> Installed and Clicked “Activate” under the name of the plugin that you have installed via File Manager

Option 4: Installing a Plugin via FTP

This FTP option of installing plugin is useful in cases such as; installing mutiple themes, editing themes, Facing security or other issues while installing plugin from WordPress admin panel. In order to use this option you must have FTP client, FTP permission on server, FTP host name, FTP username & password.

These are the steps to be followed to install theme via FTP in our case we are using FileZilla which is among the best FTP clients available on Internet.

Step 1

Open FileZilla from Desktop icon or Menu

Enter your Web hosting url, Username & Password in FileZilla to get access to your Web directories

Extract the downloaded plugin using Winrar or WInzip

Step 4

Open the remote site directory public_html from the left pane of FileZilla client

Step 5

Select wp-content under bizmissionvision.com which is our blog web directory

Step 6

Click on wp-content >> plugins

Step 7

Upload or drag the plugin folder from your local computer to remote plugin directory

Once uploaded , then go to WordPress admin panel >> Appearance >> Installed Plugins >> Cilck  “Activate” under the name of the plugin that you have installed via FileZilla
