Four Different Ways to Install WordPress Theme
In this tutorial, we will learn the ways of installing a WordPress theme via WP admin, cPanel and FTP. Even though, the end result of each theme installation method will be the same, but it’s important that one should know different ways of doing work.
When you start installation of the WordPress themes, you face difficulty like all other beginners, who come from Blogger/Tumblr. You need to understand some basic techniques or ways, which can make easy your task in installing the theme on your blog.
Four Methods of Installing WordPress Theme
Following are four different ways of installing WordPress Theme:
1. Search & Install WordPress Theme from WP Admin
2. Upload WordPress Theme via WP Admin
3. Install WordPress theme using FTP client
4. WordPress Theme Installation via FTP
Method 1: Search & Install Theme from WP Admin
Following are the steps that need to be followed for searching and installing the theme using WP admin:
Login to WP admin area of your WordPress blog by typing the url (www.yourblogname.com/wp-admin) in browser address bar as shown in below
Type your username & password in WP admin login screen; please make sure you logged in as an administrator
On successful login as administrator, you will be allowed to perform all the operations available in WordPress admin area.
On the next screen, you can perform search on different criteria; Featured, Popular, Latest, feature filter or by typing theme name in search box

Hover the mouse on theme of choice to either preview or install the theme
If you couldn’t find the theme of your choice using the Featured, Popular and Latest search then you still have Feature Filter option via which you can perform customized search based on your choice search criteria. For instance, you are looking for black color and two column holiday theme for your blog so you will perform search by clicking on feature filter option and then check color as black, layout as two columns, subject as holiday.
Now, hit Apply Filters tab to begin the theme search based on your selected criteria
Single or multiple themes will be appeared in search result as shown below. Select theme of your choice by placing mouse over theme image and click on install then Activate theme for applying it on your blog.
Option 2: Upload Theme via WP Admin
If you get the zip file of the WordPress theme then you need to install it. You should try to understand the basic way, which can help you and it should suit you.
Login to Admin area of your WordPress blog by typing the url (www.yourblogname.com/wp-admin) in browser address bar as shown in below
Type your Username & Password in WP admin login screen; please make sure you logged in as an Administrator
On successful login as administrator, you will be allowed to perform all the operations available in WordPress admin area. Click on appearance >> Themes.

Click on Add New will takes you to next page from where you can either search theme ( As we have seen in option 1) or upload theme, so you have to click on upload theme as we will install already download theme which is placed in our system.
Then you can activate the theme from the screen. There may be some problem in installing the theme through this method or it can be failed. There may be some reason behind the installing of this theme as the zip file does not include with direct theme folder.
You can use WinRar or some other tool to extract the zip file. If the name of zip file is correct then they need to check the single folder with theme name and folder will be contained with file with style.css but something other is displayed, and then avoid to upload it, as it does not look suitable for upload. You can watch inside the folder to find another folder with the name of theme. When you find the style.css file, then you can compress it as zip file and start uploading it, which will be suitable for him.
Option 3: Install WordPress Theme via Webhosting – cPanel
When you check they find various Web Hosts, which offer some control panel like Klaxon, panel or Directadmin, in which cPanel is most common and is widely used. These control panels are mostly similar and every control panel has the same file manager option.
These are the steps required to install Theme on your WordPress blogs through cPanel
Open Web hosting cPanel by typing (www.yourblog.com/cpanel) in browser address bar and hit Enter to download the login page
Enter your Username and Password in the respective text boxes in order to get access to Web hosting cPanel.
Now, you can see the Control Panel of your Web hosting with various sections and icons.
Click for File Manager under Files section of cPanel to browse your blog(s) directories
Dialog box will appears asking for selection of directory. Select root directory and then click OK to proceed further
Click your blog directory under public_html to view all the files and folders
Click on wp-content >> themes to reach the directory where you will upload the theme package which you already had download in your system storage or external storage device such as external hard drive or USB
Click on Upload icon from File Manager Tool Bar which will takes you the next screen
Click on File Upload; select the theme package from your hard disk or external storage device. In our case, the WordPress zip file is stored on E:\ drive of Hard disk
Once upload, and then extract the academica.zip by click on Extract icon on File Manager toolbar.
Login to WordPress Login area, click on Appearance >> Themes>> Activate Theme
Last but not the least, open your blog to see the look and feel of your newly installed theme
Option 4: WordPress Theme Installation via FTP
FTP is a relatively very slow process to upload the theme but it is trusted and widely used due to reason that various hosts do not offer it with the above option. All of the clients, who runs their sites on dedicated servers or the VPS. The clients need to install the FTP Client on the computer to use this method. The most popular FTP Clients are Transmit or Mac OSX or FileZilla or Windows.
The clients can find out the basics to use the FTP Client before start or continue the file with this post.
Download & Install FTP client on your system, in our case we are using FileZilla client to access our Web server directory.
Open the FTP client by double clicking the Filezilla icon from desktop or Windows menu
Provide your Host, FTP Username and Password to login your server through FileZilla
Download the zip archive with the WordPress theme and extract it.
Navigate your folder of your blog public_html >> wp-content >> themes folder
Move the theme folder which contains all theme files into the public_html >> wp-content >> themes folder
After reaching there once, you require to complete the uploading of the extract of the theme directly.
Go to WordPress Admin, click on Appearance >> Themes and Activate the recently installed theme
Open your blog to view the look & feel of your newly installed theme
We have explored all the available methods of installing theme on WordPress blog. Methods 1 & 2 are for the beginner’s level and are comparatively easy then other methods. However, installing theme via File Manager or FTP would be required in case if it couldn’t be installed from WP admin due to any issues.
