History & Versions of WordPress

In today’s time, the WordPress is a well-known CMS being used in 22% of the total website count. However, this well-liked CMS has been evolving since 2003. In this article we will take a quick look back on the evolution-timeline of WordPress and its released versions.

The developments in the WordPress were mainly brought by the developers – linked to the open-source communities, supporters and its users. These developments started back in 2003, when two users of cafelog planned to develop a new platform covering the flaws of the previous blogging system.

On 27th May, the first version of WordPress was released. Unlike the cafelog, this version had the new admin-interface, new-templates, and generated XHTML-1.1-compliant-templates. In May 2004, revised version – 1.2 got released with the incorporated plug-in architecture. It allowed the users & developers to extend its functionality through their own custom plug-ins’. The real deal was the sharing of these plug-ins’ with the enduring WordPress community.
While the WordPress had this version released, the blogging industry had a twist. The market leader of the blogging-tools industry announced the licensing terms which weren’t appreciated by many users. It resulted in a huge shift of users towards the WordPress as it presented itself as a mature, easy, flexible and stable platform with the competitive features.

The next version of WordPress – 1.5 was released in February 2005, with the innovation of theme-system. It had the incredible power of adaptation. With this version, the user had the choice of using either the single file for the entire weblog or the separate templates for different categories. In addition, the site was broken down into elements like headers, footers & sidebars.

At the end of 2005, WordPress released version 2.0, incorporated with the admin dashboard. It used DHTML and JavaScript, which enhanced the user-interface on a bigger scale. In addition, this version was the first one with the inbuilt anti-spam plug-in, and the database-backup plug-in. The later was dropped in forth-coming versions. Also, there was the introduction of functions.php file in theme-system.

In 2006, the co-founder of WordPress created a company i.e. Automattic, which joined with Happy Cog – a web-design company, in order to design a new admin-interface. In 2010, the ownership of Automattic was transferred to the WordPress-Foundation. A new version – WordPress 3.0 – was released in June 2010. This release was a big step towards the WordPress as ‘Content Management System’ – CMS.

This new version enhanced several features including the better custom-taxonomies, custom-post-types, custom backgrounds, menus, header, etc. The tradition of a yearly default-theme was also started in the same year. During 2011, admin bar and post formats penetrate into WordPress.

In 2012, media manager, theme previews, and theme customizer were introduced. These features lead to the creation of image galleries. In 2013, the automatic update feature was integrated in the CMS. It was similar to Google Chrome. These developments led to the worldwide popularity of the CMS.

In the same year, a new version was released that introduced a new admin-interface, which was responsive and determined for the better user-experience on any screen-size or any device. After that, version 3.9 was launched in April 2014. It was all about improving the visual post-editor i.e. drag-&-drop technology. It also introduced the audio playlists, live widget-previews, and some other enhancements.

For WordPress, the current year is the landmark year due to its success, developments, and user satisfaction. WordPress is on verge of assimilating the API into core, which will open a wider-programmatic world.
